Toothpaste without Coconut

What toothpaste should a person with a coconut allergy use? Until recently, unless you brushed your teeth with plain baking soda, finding a toothpaste without sodium laurel sulfate (SLS is derived from coconut and is in so many things because it makes them "foamy") was impossible. My gums always burned and my eyes watered, my nose would start running, and I always felt like gagging when brushing my teeth. I actually thought I was very allergic to mint for awhile. Sometimes toothpaste even made me sneeze. And if I had a scratch in my mouth it would blister if it came into contact with toothpaste. However, the other flavors of regularly available toothpaste all did the same thing. After I found out I was allergic to coconut, I started avoiding all SLS, and had to special order some SLS-free toothpaste.
I found some that I love from Tom's of Maine called "Natural Clean and Gentle Care":I ordered it from a place called webvitamins because it was cheaper there than anywhere else, but Amazon came in a close second. I got an Apricot flavored one with fluoride and a clove flavored one without flouride (by accident, because if I don't use fluoride, I get tons of cavities). They are both fabulous and neither one makes me have a reaction. They do a great job of cleaning, too, and I really think they are onto something here.

Most toothpastes also contain glycerin, which is often made from coconut. (It can also be made from palm kernel.)

I love Tom's of Maine deodorant becaue it doesn't have aluminum in it and it is the ONLY deodorant that doesn't make me break out under my arm pits. I haven't tried the toothpaste but I know my MIL uses it so she must get it locally. The only place I've found the deodorant is Frys grocery stores.

I am severely allergic to coconut when ingested and irritated when I come in contact with it. When ingested it is actually quite a dramatic experience. My throat closes up, my chest feels (as best as I can describe it since I was a kid) like an elephant is standing on it, I vomit and to top it all off I produce crazy amounts of saliva as if I'm foaming at the mouth. It is crazy and embarrassing. I used to be a waiter and found, while serving pina coladas, that I now break out in hives when I come in contract with straight coconut and my face swells up like I was sprayed with mace.

Each time I accidently come across coconut it gets worse and worse. However, I had no idea how many products coconut is in until I started snooping around online about (while researching my fiance's cold allergy oddly). This could explain so many things.

I found it random that you had that toothpaste on here because I found it at Target in Jacksonville, FL where I now live. When I picked up randomly I remember quoting to my fiance that "this is the best toothpaste in the world" ...randomly enough it is probably because it lacked the coconut products in other brands.

I just want to thank you for posting this blog and making me start to be aware that half of the problems I have are probably caused by not knowing enough about my allergy to coconut. I randomly stumbled across something that could improve my quality of life so much.

Thanks, Kim!
Just remember that you might want to add some flouride- I went flouride free for a couple months and got two cavities- and I had previously never had any in my life.

Weleda also makes coconut free toothpaste I've tried both the plant gel and ratanhia toothpastes and both seem to work

I believe Biotene Antibacterial Dry Mouth Tooth past is sls free and also does not contain any other derivatives but please double check. http://sale.dentist.net/products/biotene-antibacterial-dry-mouth-toothpaste

This link has a tab that u can click and see all its ingredients. I think it also has fluoride protection which is important for some...of course some prefer to not have it.

I forgot to mention that biotene DOES have an egg derived protein in it...just a warning for people with egg allergies.

Beware: This Tom's toothpaste contains Glycerin and it says right on the website that it is derived from, soy, corn and COCONUT. I have emailed Weleda to see if their Glycerin is coconut derived as well.
