Toothpaste Updates

I am sad to report that Tom's of Maine has ditched all those wonderful SLS-free toothpaste flavors like clove and apricot and such, and we are just left with plain mint. But, at least we still have that!

One of our readers, Sabrina, tipped me off to a new toothpaste that is SLS free and appears to not have any coconut in the ingredients. It is called Closys. It's main feature is some germ-killing ability with some pretty scary sounding new chemicals that they have invented, but they do sell sample sizes so you may not have to blow $11 on a tube. But, at least on this website they have a coupon you can register for. I like coupons.

Can I just say how tired I am of having a coconut allergy and having to pay not just a percentage more for shampoos and toothpaste. . . but double or even quadruple!

A big thanks to everyone who sends ideas for products. Now, if I could just get some companies to send us some products to try! Us poor coconut allergic folks are still a minority in the US market.

I love Jason toothpaste and other products.

I have used this for nearly ten years. My hygienist recommended it and was the first to tell me about SLS. I didn't realize then that it was derived from coconut - my only food allergy. To not live with constant canker sores is a beautiful thing.

Thanks for your blog!

I'm trying to find a toothpaste for my daughter. She is 7 and has a coconut allergy like her mom :) (me). She was fine with reg toothpastes but recently started with mouth ulcers. She hates mint, and the Jason one listed above contains Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate (which is listed in your derivatives list). Help!!!! What can I do for her??? I seem to be ok with SLS so it really just for her.

Sherrist- You could always have her brush with a baking soda paste and then swish with a fluoride rinse (the kids ones are all bubble gum flavor). But, I think that baking soda might be yuckier than mint! Think about what dentists use to clean your teeth at the office- it's just flavored pumice with none of that foamy stuff at all. My dentist once told me that brushing your teeth without toothpaste can be effective as long as you can get some fluoride to prevent tooth decay.
