hi there, here is another couple for your list Sodium Lauroamphoacetate,
Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate. This site has been very interesting for me as my son has a coconut allergy and is sensitive to products containing coconut derivitives
Thanks, Brenda. I can't believe how many things there are that keep coming up. Anything with "Lauro" I steer clear of because it means coconut.
Thanks for your list! People think that just because these ingredients come from a "natural" source that they won't cause problems, but people suffer from food allergies too (even the most organic and natural ones).
wow, this list answers alot of questions, I get itchy with some shampoos or bath washes and kept thinking that since i didn't see teh words coconut, it had to be something else. I'm allergic to coconut, teh oil and any lotions. Now my face swells, throat closes and I break out into hives.=(
Wow. Thank you for this list. I am creating new soaps/shampoos and other products for people with allergies..especially to coconut, and this is a good list to have on file for me. Anyone here with allergies I wouldnt mind making products for you that you are having a hard time finding. I am really dedicated to letting people with allergies have spa like experiences when it comes to natural skin care. If you don't mind, is it ok to quote you in my blog? Thanks

Sure, let us know when your coconut free products are available. Thanks.
OMG is that a long list! My daughter has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy, which her allergist said includes coconut. Coconut oil is in everything! I wonder why it's not listed on products as an allergen?
I would ask your allergist to test more specifically. They should be able to test for each specific nut separately from coconut. If yours is the type who just uses the "nut mix", make sure you find a way to do them all individually so you have more options out there. I had one allergist that wouldn't do it, and one who did it routinely. But no, coconut and tree nuts are quite different.
I had not even considered coconut-derived ingredients... Rosemary always looks red in the bathtub and I'm sure it is b/c of SLS in the soap/shampoo. Thanks for your reply on the heavenlyhomemakers blog!
Plain baking soda works great for laundry soap just add a cup in your laundry, you can get big containers of it at some hardware stores and some janitorial supply stores
Thank you for this list. I am terribly allergic to coconut and am struggling to figure out what I can use in the way of soap and shampoo. Is there anything people are using right now?
Yes, palm is in the same family as coconut, but only some people are allergic to both. . . the same way only a few people are allergic to peanuts and other legumes like beans.
hows things?? im just gone 24 and i live in da west of ireland and im havin serious trouble wit my allergies.. im anphilactic i have serious allegeries to penuts, shell fish and da worst is coconut i had a bad reaction wen i was 8 to eatin coconut and drinkn da milk and bout 2 years ago i nearly died i got in a car wit a coconut air freshner and it nearly killed me tankfully i got to a doctor at half 12 at night he said a half hour later and i was brown bread (dead).. da services round here are actually terrible and everything i cum across has coconut in it and i cant get any help wit it. ye have all da stuff i need in america but they dont ship to ireland.. can ye please help me out wit names of a saop, shampoo and toothpaste that i cud use please and tanks i tink yer my only hope and sorry bout my spellin i left school at 12.. if ye cud even email me @ tuamforlife@yahoo.com it wud b very helpfull tanks again
Carnauba wax - in fruit snacks, candies, makeups, etc. is another palm/coconut product --- which we learned from my daughter's severe reactions and after we learned about coconut and palms at the Garfield Conservatory.
And to answer Anni - yes, some people are very allergic to both palm and coconut and all derivatives. My daughter is one of them.
I think this is the best blog ever, so happy I found it.
wow, that list kinda scares me, i knew to steer clear of anything listed as starting in coco, but this is crazy. I am also allergic to dairy and tree nuts and peanuts; are there any scientific names lists for any of those that I should watch for on ingredient lists?
So I am going to be honest here, I felt such dispair, physical dispair, as I researched for hours today to find something, anything that I could use to get relief from the hives and incessant itching. If it's not a tree nut, it's something else. I live daily with rashes because I have yet to find something that I can use that doesn't aggravate something.
I am allergic to tree nuts, fish and dust/mold/cats/dogs/trees/air it seems. Apparently vinegar is not good for those with mold allergies...Who knew?
So here I sit hitting wall after wall wanting clean/managable hair (tried no-poo, not for me) and itch free, ezcema free skin. I dream about it sometimes. Being allergy free.
Might want to add decyl glucoside to the list. It is also derived from coconut.
Be aware of Magnisuim Stearate. it can be made from either an animal or plant source. if it is a plant source it is often palm oil. I took Reactine to help with my allergies but then realized that magnisium stearate is a filler in Reactine and it is made from palm oil. Allergic to the allergy pill! be aware of other fillers in medications as well.
Brita water filters use coconut husks to make their activated charcoal. This caused a reaction for me.
good luck, it is nice to know I am not alone in this coconut/palm filled world.

I found a laundry detergent that appears to not have any coconut ingredients in it. It is called Allens Naturally Liquid Laundry Detergent and I found it on a website of someone who is chemically sensitive. The ingredients in it are
Water, Alkylarylethoxylate, Triethanolamine, Linear Alkylaryl Sulfonate, and Sodium Chloride. Does anyone know if any of these ingredients are derived from coconut? I looked them up online but nothing came up about coconut.
Not all vegetable glycerines are coconut-derived (some are palm), but if it doesn't specify, it's best to avoid. I tried finding an Etsy seller who made a liquid shampoo without coconut, but when I asked about it on the forums, I got five different comments about what lovely suds coconut makes, and how you really can't have soap without coconut. And then I turned around and found goat's milk soap at the grocery store without it. I'm about to try washing my hair with that, or else making my own.
Where would we all be had you not undertaken this blog? To pass on some info to those who suffer from multiple allergies; was it brought on suddenly. Do you also suffer from a thyroid autoimmune disease such as Graves' disease or hashimotos ? Have your allergist perform the autoimmune blood serum test, you may be suffering from chronic idiopathic urticaria . Treatment is available that can ease your suffering. My coconut allergy is waning due to treatment of ciu. Thank you Becky ,
I don't have anything affecting my thyroid, and it has been tested recently. But, I think allergies, especially multiple allergies could actually be considered an autoimmune condition. But, I have been tested for those, too, and don't have any. I do think that that is good information and hopefully people will explore all treatment options if they are suffering from relentless allergies. So glad you're getting help.
Hi! Thanks so much for your help! Is this list for topical products AND food products OR just topical products. Also, I am trying to find a butter that my daughter can eat. Earth's Balance make's a butter-alternative, but it has palm oil (NOT coconut oil). I can't tell from your blog and from Wiki if you're allergic to ingested palm oil like you would be ingested coconut or coconut oil. Can you please help?! Thanks!
Joy- these chemicals are mostly topical products, but they are also found in foods like toothpaste, medicines, etc. I assume your daughter can't have dairy and you need a butter alternative? I don't have any reaction to the earth's balance ones that contain palm oil, but when I have vegan friends over, I will use the one that has mostly grapeseed oil.
Hi Becky
What an interesting blog. I have recently found out the I am intolerant of Isopropryl Myristate a coconut derivative. The kinesiologist/nutrition who has tested me asked me to check what shampoo, body lotion etc that I have been using. I have checked everything. I am also lactose intolerant and have been using coconut milk (brand name Koko)for my cereal which I buy in England. I also note that a soap I have been given has sodium cocoate. I wonder what the connection is between isopropryl myristate and sodium cocoate, are they the same or just derived from coconut. I have yet to be tested for the food substance (coconut milk) and have only been tested for the chemical reaction. I would be interested in your thoughts. Many thanks Anne
Unknown,
Allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities are all different things. When a Kinesiologist tests you for things, it is far different from having an allergist test you, so if you are currently tolerating coconut milk, you probably don't have any reaction to the coconut part of those chemicals. Think of these many chemical variations of coconut like the many variations chemists can make with plastic. You have everything from saran wrap to a chair, and even silly putty: all related to plastic, but containing other things and vastly different. Even chemists don't really care to take the time to explain the reasons all of these ingredients that are derived from coconut do what they do, but you can google them on wikipedia and make some guesses.
Thank you Becky for your answer, my kinesiologist who also does allergy testing is going to test me next week with the coconut milk to see if it a food reaction as well as a chemical reaction. At the moment I have stopped having the coconut milk just in case it is causing a problem.
Anne
I have a son who is severely allergic to all things coconut. He is even allergic to the Tamiflu drug because one of the ingredients is a derivative of coconut. He recently had a severe reaction where we had to administer his epi-pen and call an ambulance. The only thing I could trace that he ate was a gumball containing Carnauba wax. Do you know if that's related to coconut? I've researched online but found very little. Thanks in advance :)
Joanna- It's probably not just related to coconut. I know people who are allergic to waxes, gums, food colorings, etc. I would find an allergist who can test him for these things -- chances are he might not have known he is allergic to multiple things. I know very few people with food allergies who are only allergic to one food.
Thank you for this blog!! I am so glad to have found it. I realised in November that I was allergic to Cetyl/Stearyl alcohol, which seems to have been triggered by the birth of baby #3. However even after eliminating those ingredients I'm still getting itchy bumps + eczema and am now wondering if its a general coconut allergy (I also get an itchy throat when I eat coconut.) Sounds like its time I had an allergy test?! Many thanks for the list of ingredients to avoid. I tend to make my own skin products now, so that at least I know what is in them. But i had not considered products such as shampoo or soap. Hmmmm......
Hi. Can you, or anyone else, recommend a coconut-free soap for hands and body? I've searched online for days and nobody has mentioned anything specific. Even Johnson's baby products are full of it, from what I can tell. Thanks.
Severly allergic to coconut and found a shampoo from a company at www.countryrosesoaps.com that make all natural shampoo, soaps, deoderant without coconut or lauryl sulphates. It works Amazing. they are from BC and ship to canada and the states. I use to use the vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda on my hair until I found this. I also wash my clothes in vinegar and lemon juice and it works great.
My daughter was diagnosed with a peanut allergy at two, but something else was wrong. At three, I figured out it was ALOE. Still she breaks out. You can't keep everyone from using aloe and then not touching (hugging, tapping, high fives) her. My mil decided coconut oil would cure my daughter's eczema. Two days later (as the first head to toe reaction wasn't definitive enough for her) she conceded daughter has a coconut allergy.
I've embarked on making my own lotion for her as everything has aloe or coconut. Now I see all these chemicals. You and your blog are going to be my new best friends. Thank you for all your hard work (even if it was self serving); you didn't have to share but you did! Thank you!
-Dawn
Is it possible to be sensitive to some of the ingredients on the list, and not others?
Some of these ingredients can also be made from other things (they are not exclusive to coconut). Also, everyone's sensitivity level is different and it may depend on whether it is the first ingredient in the product or the last.
I "find" new food products that almost kill me all the time. like a Mexican style pizza or products change ingredients but not their packaging. I have had issues since my appendix surgery at 16yrs old. allergies popped up to cat's, dog's, coconut, and adhesive to name a few.
Until yesterday when I found your
blog I thought I was allergic to another unidentified something. That was in bath washes and laundry soaps. Now I know that my dandruff shampoo, conditioner, tooth paste, deodorant, lotion, and laundry soap are the cause. This was lending to my "bad" days the cumulative effects of my entire morning routine.
I feel so defeated after trying
so hard to be careful. I will change all my product. then see if my random migraines and other problems go away. Using your list I found Glyceryl dilaurate by typing it into a cosmetics site it says its from Lauric Acid.
I am so glad to find I am NOT the only one with a coconut allergy. My doctor's think I am crazy.
Thank you for this list. It explains why I have been having so many issues lately. I have tried to go a healthier route, but they all seem to attempt to 'poison' me.
Thank you so much! For the longest time I couldn't figure out why I was always itchy after showering, washing my hands, or using various cleansing products. I also never really liked any foods/beverages with coconut in them either. Then, one day I tried to use coconut oil as a moisturizer (apparently it was amazing for my friend, so I thought I'd give it a try) and forgot to do a wrist-test. I had used it before bed and when I woke up I had the worst eczema I had ever had in my life. My dermatologist didn't actually test me, but she said my immediate reaction was pretty conclusive. Since then I have thrown out all shampoos with ingredients beginning with "coco" (and I never had anything with SLS because I had guessed before that possibly it was SLS making me itchy) but I've still been having problems with shampoos. I am so glad that I have found this, because now I know what to steer clear of. However, I currently have no shampoo in my house and I have been washing my hair with olive-oil soap and it is horrible, so I am wondering if anybody knows of products that are completely coconut-free?
From reading all these comments it would seem that there are many people with the same problem as me, so it is pretty shocking that basically no shampoos, conditioners, body washes, etc. are derived from anything but coconut!
This list is not very accurate. Many of the items on this list are actually very toxic and not derived from coconut oil. First r example sodium Lauryl sulfate is not from coconut oil. Many believe they are allergic to coconut oil because of this when it is in fact other toxic chemicals. My sister thought she was allergic and turns out when she used plain coconut oil, she didn't get a reaction.
Kassy- yes, of course many of these ingredients can cause sensitivities that are not related to coconut, but they are, in fact, often derived from coconut or they would not be on this list. This is why I suggest that people consult with an allergist instead of trying to diagnose themselves using naive self-invented theories.
I became allergic to Decyl glucoside - derived from coconut wax and corn sugars , manufactured by dow chemical , it's in every single organic children's baby wash and shampoo- I am initially allergic to Methylisothiazolinine- it may have began my sensitization if skin which then made me allergic to the Decyl glucoside- but not even the smartest top dermatology at UCSF knows how things work like this . I am currently afraid that the Decyl glycosude allergy could mean all coconut products are unsafe.
Great blog. Becky is so right. Don't jump to conclusions until you've been tested and seen a dermatologist or specialist. This is REALLY important. I went through the testing this past December and it was very insightful. I am deadly allergic to tree nuts, but have no problem eating coconut or using coconut oil on my skin or in food. I can drink coconut water and coconut milk. However, I did test positive for all surfactants, including lauryl glucoside and oleamidopropyl dimethylamine, methylisothiazolinone (biocide/preservative), dimethylaminopropylamine and cocamidopropyl betaine, and many others on the posted list of coconut-derived ingredients. I am experimenting with several products (with no coconut-derived ingredients) to use as a shampoo at this time. It's an ongoing battle.
I've been helping my sister find a hair shampoo conditioner that she can use she is allergic to coconut and her biggest problems are with soap/shampoos/conditioners. Do you know anything about the So Cozy products? I can't find an ingredient list and it claims to be nut free, gluten free, wheat free.
Gina, sorry I don't know about the So Cosy products. I would have to contact them directly.
For a long time, I only knew about my shampoo allergy, and it didn't seem serious enough to pay an allergist out of pocket for. After all, I'd found a workaround. Now I realize that coconut's in practically everything, so I'm going to see if my HMO will refer me for more concise testing. I wrote up my own story here.
I'm so glad to find your blog. If you could setup the search for it to come up when you type in "coconut allergies" more people will find you.
I'm also allergic to coconut and appreciate all the work you have put into this site for all of us. Thank you! Cathy Clifford
So does anyone know any shampoos or body washes WITHOUT these ingredients?
I have found another shampoo and cream rinse that has not coconut in them. Instead of using Cream of Cocoa shampoo bar which is hard on my hear and more and more difficult to find, I'm using Sunfood's Natural Plant Based SHampoo and Natural Plant Based Conditioner. I want to try their body wash.
Hi there, I've just found your blog and am glad to hear that I'm not alone in this struggle. Several of you asked about hair products. I am currently using Morrocco Method products and love them. There is a 'detox' period with them that can be on the long side, but it is worth it. They are made with oils, clays, essential oils, herbs and a few other natural ingredients.
Thank you so much for all the information. I am allergic to coconut amonst several other things. It has been very difficult the last 6 years. I suddenly became allergic after a surgery that didn't go as planned. After it was over my first allergy that I noticed was peanuts, then cashews, then coconut. It kept growing after that. I have found through research that my problems stem from my latex allergy. I thought that might be of interest to you and others. I am on a tight buget, but would like to make my own soaps, etc. Do you know of a recipe that doesn't include coconut? Also what do you use to wash your dishes? I have alternatives for everything but that. - Desperately Seeking Dish Detergent or alternative.
I have found va-soaps.com. Richelle is making a specialty body bar shampoo, soap, and shave all in one for me that is coconut and Palm and Palm kernel oils free now. I will let you know how it works out. I tried Chagrin Valley one soap Olive and Shea caused my skin to break out. I ordered a castile soap from them so we will wait and see.
I have also realized I have a reaction to topical coconut derivatives. I have sensitive rash and irritation prone skin and everything that you grab to soothe these conditions appears to have coconut! I realized mine from capric trygliceride. It almost burns me after a few days of use I get extreme dry bumpy skin it is so strange. Does anyone have a suggestion on a skin care line that is coconut free? Thank you
Try Lush brand products! They make so many great ones without coconuts!
I would like to suggest a correction to one of the comments - they state that lauro means coconut. In fact lauro, lauryl etc. refers to a part of the molecule in question - it is a hydrocarbon chain with 12 carbons. It does not mean coconut. Many of the listed items may be derived from coconuts but some may also be made synthetically.
I too have found bright earths soap nut shampoo and conditioner. I love them and feel so clean and not itchy. Also uncle harrys products and hemp organics for my lips.

Hi Becky. I stumbled on your site by happy accident and boy am I glad. I have been battling an "unknown" allergy for a year now. Head to toe hives all the time. I always suspected I was allergic to SLS in laundry soap but have not had it confirmed yet. Today I had a coconut cookie and broke out immediately. I googled coconut allergy and found your site. My mind was BLOWN. SLS is from coconut. I never knew. I went through your list and compared it to my bathroom products. Literally everything has it. This explains so much. After reading all your comments I saw that allergy medication could have it too. And lo and behold I'm taking that medication too. Psyched to see some relief in sight hopefully. Fingers crossed. Thank you so much.
I've spent so many hours trying to find coconut-free makeup & skincare and have found several brands that carry coconut-free products (a few carry quite a bit and a few carry only some coconut free products). Just check the labels, but you will be surprised how many items you find that you like! So happy I did all this research my skin is finally getting better :)
-Silk Naturals (my personal favorite-AMAZING skincare too)
-Vapour Organics (trying out this concealer)
-BeautyCounter (trying out their lip gloss & others)
-Cleure (want to try their lip pencils & others)
-Zuzu Luxe (trying out their brow pencil)
Also, Clean Kids Naturally makes good coconut-free hair care products and body wash/hand wash
I hope this helps!
Following up on the comment I just left as "Anonymous"....to the blogger....thank you so much for creating this blog site! So helpful and you were the one that got me going on my coconut-free product endeavors :)
holy crap, thank you so much for this list. i am learning so much ab out an allergy I've had for 20+ years. i just figured out what to avoid when i was younger and have generally stuck with that plan. never really delved that much further into it. but now i have a better idea of some of the things that the evil coconut is part of. thanks so much for this!!!!
I tested positive for Cocamidopropyl Betaine which can be found in shampoos, conditioner, soaps, toothpaste, and in cosmetics. I am not allergic to coconut but I do stay away from any coconut derivatives when it comes to skincare. I use the Vanicream line which I love! You can order thru Amazon and some of their products you can find at walgreens and cvs. This line is free of frangrance, dyes, lanolin, parabans, formaldehyde. I also highly recommend the Skin Safe App.
Hi can you make a soap that is coconut everything free for my daughter who is allergic to it?
I am literally sick to my stomach ... My 7 year old is allergic to tree nuts, peanuts, mango & coconut. I cannot find a soap, shampoo, laundry soap or dish washing liquid that is safe. Please advisers
For people looking for a very pure, simple soap, I love Kiss My Face's olive oil soap. It only has three ingredients: olive oil, water, and salt. I use it for my hands and body daily, but I have also used it on for my face too. I'm assuming it could work for shampoo, too. Good luck!
Going to try the Kiss My Face, thank you. I thiught I had rosacea, turned out to be my soap. I didn't realize the list was so long. What about shampoo? I am starting to loose my hair and scalp itches all the time.
I am also allergic to kiwi, so be cautious of that. I am afraid to use anything else.
I use black african soap now. And it has changed my life. It is a bar soap and my skin is clearing and I have lost what i consider to now be water weight in my in my skin- as I never realized I was puffy from the coconut exposure.
I had a bad experience lately. I bought a black forest cake for my husbands birthday. I was sick for 4 days. Many stores are now using coconut water to make their icings or are putting it into the recipes to help sweeten them up. Be cautious.
Skin Safe is a great app. You can scan items and it lets you know list of ingredients and if its safe for you depending on your chemical allergies. I cant believe how many people have so many allergies. I am allergic to to so many things its scary. God help me I would not want to find myself in a hospital as I am allergic to formaldahyde, Mci/MI wich is in everything, coconut derivatives even clothing gives me a rash! There are some shampoos and conditioners that dont contain coconut in it its listd on the skin safe app
I appreciate this list so much! I am a Posh consultant, I love that our products are naturally based, but I always ask my customers if they have allergies. And now I have a customer who is allergic to coconut. Posh thankfully lists all the ingredients in the catalog for each product, however I didn't realize some of the ingredients listed were derived from coconut. Thank you for this list, it will help me to provide my customers with the best products, without worrying about them having a reaction. 😊
One of the reason that so many people are allergic to coconut it is because it is the number one food on the list of latex allergies. It is connected to latex.
Interesting to see all of us have so many similar symptoms! For years I was so itchy and blamed it on stress never thinking I would be allergic to anything. Then after a skin test with my products they all had Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Got a note from the doc saying it was a foaming ingredient so all these products (I thought) were out but it's so hard to get shampoo! Hand liquid soap I prefer to a bar as my rings get all stuck with soap but even the bar of soap can have coconut in it! My problem at the moment is on my face and eyes again. Discovered I was using Elemis cleansing balm as no foaming ingredient to find out from this list it's got coconut in it and I think that's what has been drying my skin. So annoying as I love the smell. Stopped using it but my skin isn't clearing up! So now looking into all products I use! Taking me ages! I use Epern cream/ointment on my face (from the doc) and shower with double bass gel. Not looked into these yet but assuming they are ok. Shampoo is Paul Mitchell kids shampoo(!) it's fine But now not sure as it's got betaine in it-any ideas?! Use bare minerals nearly every day. Just the original foundation as the others have extra filling ingredients.
Also interesring to find someone allergic to aloe! I've used it for years as my parents distributors but couldn't understand when my skin was bad I would put the jelly on and 2secs later I would be in so much pain, heat and itchy even more so I've avoided it ever since. Shame as it's got so many benefits!
Not sure I'm actually allergic internally with coconut-I hope not as I love it but defo allergic to it on my skin. I think this is what faired my last lot up. Similar to above post, went to bed and woke up with eczema I never had the night before!
Anyway thanks for the very useful site!!
Great site, I've picked up some excellent references for coconut-free products here. It's truly amazing how many products have coconut or coconut-derived ingredients. My allergy developed about 7-8 years ago. Symptom is angioedema, and very annoying but certainly not life threatening in my case. It's a systemic reaction and occurs 12-18 hours after my exposure. Yes - it's that regular in terms of reaction time. Then I need to "replay my life" to determine what caused it! Anyway, I need to be a detective and as an example it's important to NOT take the waiter/waitress' word for whether there is any coconut in dishes at a restaurant! Make them check with the chef! For example- don't eat the ice cream if they did not make it in the restaurant because most commercial ice creams are made with coconut oil these days. There are some exceptions but most restaurants don't have ingredients for "purchased" foods like ice cream and cookies/cakes. I'm sure all your readers know these things but great to share random thoughts here.
I am on the verge of making my own deodorant if I cannot find a commercial one that is coconut-free. Any suggestions?
Add Cetyl betaine to the list.
Thanks so much for this list. My allergy is coconut specific but sometimes I wondered what else.NOW . thanks to this list, I'm doing much better.
Also anything with COCO or COCA at beginning as my pharmacist has told me safe bet the product has coconut or a derivative of coconut in it
Also probly palm oil or palmate
How do I found if Im allergic to coconut stuff on skin?
I now have some weird, I belive stress- related skin rash on neck and arms and I suspect some allergy... Wonder if the cocoa glucoside may be the cause?
In the past 6/7 years I've developed new and extreme allergic symptoms to some mystery substance... i'm 45 and as teen figured out sensitive to fragrances & since avoided. But 6/7 years ago i started reacting to foods and beauty products I've used for years ..extreme nasal congestion and burn like blisters. Mystery solved! Blood work showed coconut allergy and they changed chemical in products to amplify fragrances. Thank you so much for info on coconut products. My poor face and nose cant take coconut and fragrances anymore! Im so angry that companies didnt inform everyone when they changed the chemicals & ingredients in their products. I have some old versions of stuff and none have coconut or that new chemical used to amp scent! Now everything has coconut oil &/or that chemical to amp fragrances. Most of us never were exposed to these ingredients therefore foreign to immune system. How can companies change formula without labeling product with new change??? And no testing done on coconut oil so how could companies just switch like that overnight without testing?
Bella our stories sound so similar! No problems until after I had baby #3, now weird hand rash and I can't figure out what is triggering it!
I read someone mentioned Skin Safe Products web site as a good app/webpage to find products with allergen free ingredients. I have used this app and website, but they are not always accurate. When I searched for non-coconut ingredient shampoos, they would send me a list of safe products. When I researched the products' ingredients, there were indeed coconut based products in the ingredient list of some of the products...just be careful. I have contacted them about these items, but did not get a response.
If you have a product that you think is free of an allergen, try the EWG Skin Deep. org website. you can search for your product's ingredients there to see if it is coconut based. It allows you to search for an ingredient within a product..it does NOT allow a search for a product without a particular ingredient, which is frustrating.
Thank you all for some of your suggestions and thank you for this blog.
Here is my story:
I knew I had a sensitivity or intolerance to something when I was a teen, but didn't know what was causing my gas and acne. I tried whatever the dermatologist suggested. I finally concluded that, even though he said that acne is all about clean skin and not what I ate, I decided to cut out all junk food and as much sugar as possible, except fruits. My skin cleared up!!! But, I didn't really know why. As an adult, I still watch what I eat, but noticed occasional break outs and hives as well as IBS. As I grew into my 20s I found out I was allergic to the onion plant. but something else was affecting my skin and digestive system. Years. later, in my 50's all the pieces fell into place. My daughter had suggested I use pure coconut oil on my skin and I broke out in hives, boils, and pimples!!! I had also recently ate some coconut ice cream a few days before that which had caused a bad IBS reaction and more hives!! All this time it was coconut!!!
Since watching for the coconut ingredients in food and topical items, and getting them out of my life as much as I can, my skin, acid/gas and hives are mostly gone. Sometimes I get something that has a coconut derived ingredient and it makes me itch or minor hives or digestive issues, but not as bad as it use to be.
When my kids skin started to break out, and we cut these items out of their diet as much as possible, they too saw great results.
I am still searching for a shampoo and conditioner that I can be happy with. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Recently figured out through allergy testing with the pediatrician and dermatologist that my son is allergic to coconut! Seemed crazy to me but explained so much after realizing all the things that coconut derived products are in! Very helpful list, thanks :)
thank you so much for this list i have a feeling i'm printing it and putting it in my purse. mine is anallergy i feel i have developed, mainly to professional shampoos, hair care products and recently a anti aging cream. my skin and i Thank you.
Something else to think about - water filters. Most major filter companies use coconut shells to make the carbon filter.
Yes, Ame, unfortunately water filters are a problem and I did post about that, too! It has happened to me. http://coconutallergy.blogspot.com/2016/07/i-really-am-allergic-to-water-coconut.html
Becky, do you know if cetearyl olivate is coconut derived? I'm assuming olivate means from olive/olive oil?
I'm learning to make my own skin-care products (soaps, lotions, balms, etc.) for my daughter, who has a severe coconut allergy, and it's hard to make a water-based lotion or tincture without a preservative. It seems that most preservatives are made from coconut-derived chemical formulations.
Thanks for any feedback! :)
thank you...most people don't believe me when i tell them i have to avoid coconut. but as soon as even slightly taste coconut it is like an alarm goes off and i must stop eating or drinking whatever it is. then i feel queasy for several hours. and then it passes. i've never eaten much so i have no idea how i would react if i did. i have nit met anyone else who has the sane experience...so this has been helpful. also i've gad a hard time tracking some foods that i have this reaction to but cannot see palm or coconut in the ingredient list now i know what else to look for. i am lucky those this is the only food sensitivity that i have.
Can anyone recommend a deodorant that does not contain ingredients derived from soy, tree nuts, or coconut?
I have discovered a website called kissfreely.com that makes skin care products and cosmetics that are free of the top eight allergens, along with coconut and many others. Check it out!
Here's the link to Kissfreely products:
https://kissfreely.com?rfsn=1636896.c923f5
bodyceuticals (calendulaskincare.com) makes a coconut-free lip balm. The ingredients in the unflavored calendula lip balm are organic olive oil, organic calendula flowers, beeswax, & vitamin E. It is wheat free and gluten-free, and the tube I bought also says soy-free. I contacted them, because they make a coconut lip balm and I was concerned about cross contamination. They replied: There is no coconut in our USDA Certified Organic Unflavored Calendula Lip Balm. Our manufacturing facility is cleaned to USDA standards to prevent cross contamination between products.
In answer to my own question on August 2, a coconut-free deodorant is made by Crystal (thecrystal.com). The only ingredient is Ammonium Alum (Mineral Salts).
I hope this would help, coconut derived ingredients.
Caprylyl/capryl glucoside is a glucose alkyl ether derived from coconuts.
Ethylhexylglycerin is a clear liquid preservative derived from vegetable glycerin, often coconut or palm oil.
Stearic acid is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in animal and plant fats (typically coconut or palm oil).
Glyceryl stearate, also called glyceryl monostearate, is a white or pale yellow waxy substance derived from palm kernel, olives or coconuts.

I've had good luck with kiss my face bar soap. It literally has 3 ingredients.
Which ones? I looked on their website and all of their body washes use coconut derivatives.
My coconut allergy reaction is that I get ulcerations in my mouth and throat (plus nausea) if I ingest coconut or any derived ingredients (severity depends on the form and concentration), and breakouts/redness/itchiness/hives from skin contact (e.g. soap, lotion, makeup). Sometimes if the ingredient is far enough down on the list I don't really notice it, and I'm ok with certain shampoos as long as I spend 10 mins (literally) thoroughly rinsing my hair.
Two things I wanted to say:
1. "Skin Safe" is a website and mobile app that allows you to filter through all kinds of products by certain allergens (including coconut). It also has a feature where your doctor can give you a "personal allergy code" to make filtering products easier (I haven't done this, but there's info on it on the website). I always double check the ingredients list on products before using anything, and I have noticed that some of the things they say are "coconut free" have ingredients like carnauba wax or other derivatives--these products could still be safe because of protein denaturation during processing or because those derivatives can come from a source other than coconut, but still be careful!
2. If you're looking for a face moisturizer: Glow Recipe's "watermelon glow pink juice moisturizer" has been working really well for me. It's sold at Sephora; it's a little pricey, but it works really well, the smell is very light at first but doesn't last more than a minute, and the ingredients list specifies the source of each ingredient (for example, "Cetearyl Olivate (derived from olive)".
I just found this blog & I am so thankful...I recently discovered my coconut/palm oil allergy and have spent months trying to get rid of anything with it. I now know I am going to loose the battle, sadly. I am getting almost to the point of need my epi pen. I am feeling much better after ditching anything I could ASAP....now I'm getting even deeper into this allergy. I'm not new to allergies, I have an Apple allergy that I wish someone would do a list like this for as well. Thank you and I will be watching all the posts and keeping the list going. Thank you so much!
I am expecting more interesting topics from you. And this was nice content and definitely it will be useful for many people.
I make my own soap with olive oil, lard, water and lye (aka caustic soda), essentail oils are optional. You can use a variety of oils but this is what I use. I love it! I've used it on my hair and it's okay. Right now I'm trying baking soda and water to cleanse and acv with water to rinse.
Something else I didn't see is Polysorbate 80.
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I just found it in a search for my son. He is severly allergic to coconut and derivatives. Recently I bought him what I thought were safe gummies because they had no coconur in them and were made with canauba wax (palm wax). He was blistered in hives for days and needed steroids. No more palm for us!
Positive root therapy is , Onion Hair Growth oil is power packed with nutrients like sulfur, amino acids Which are best for hair growth On regular usage of this oil, hairs receives all the nutrients , antioxidants needed to increase your hair growth , buy
onion oil for hair growth ., at best price .
Hope this helps..it is a godsend for me. I found a website in cooperation with the Mayoclinic called SkInSafe. You can search products based on your allergies. What is even better is that when the manufacturers submit their product for inclusion they have to say the source. For example, an ingredient that can come from palm or coconut may still show up in the safe list as not having coconut because of what it is derived from. They reply as well and this is how I found out how some of the things I thought had coconut in fact were safe. https://www.skinsafeproducts.com/about

Hi Becky I’ve been trying to fond out if peg 6 caprylic/capric glycerine is a derivative of coconut. I spent 9 months going to my Derm to get scalp dermatitis- from coconut oil- cleared up. Well at close to a year, I’m still - let’s say -healing from it. I have googled it and find that triglycerides are and if u put coco after capric yes they are coconut. But I can find squat on peg 6 caprylic/capric glycerides. Do you know by any chance? I have thrown out so many shampoos, stylers, body wash due to coconut derivatives. Why the heck don’t companies list on their bottles- derived front coconut- what’s the big deal?? Thank you for your help and for listening. Mesh

Hi just to add if a product says 'glazing agent' as an ingrediant it should say what ingrediant exactly they use to polish or coat the product in brackets, if not please double check as its normally carnauba wax or coconut oil. This is mainly in sweets and vitamins. I bought a very expensive vitamin bears called nutri bears from Cytoplan and it had failed to mention what glazing ingrediant they had used. My daughter kept getting reactions and I wasnt aware it was the vitamins as I checked the ingredients before buying. Finally I suspected it was the vitamins and when I went back on their website they had updated their ingrediants adding in brackets (carnauba wax, coconut oil) for glazing agent but on the bottle this wasn't mentioneded at all in the igrediants. I was so angry and upset. Luckily my daughters allergy isnt so life threatening but it was giving her so much eczema all over her body and making her so itchy and she was losing appetite to eat. I had to take her to a homeopath and clear her system out with holistic remedies.
So hard to keep on top of all the ingrediants but this list helps me so much so thank you.
Thank you for this website. I bought a yeast infection medicine that contains "cetyl resin wax" & as I was itching & trying not to scratch, I looked up each ingredient. Cetyl resin wax is a natural wax produced by coconut.
I'm allergic to coconut.i took one dose of this yeast infection medicine of 3 doses & my entire body itches. Benadryl is helping only a minor bit.
I'm also allergic to sulfites (no wine drinking for me), morphine, sulfa drugs, & Splenda.
I would be interested in a shampoo, conditionet and body lotion without all the coconut ingredients. I can't seem to find enough product looking forward to your response

Hi everyone! I have struggled with a horribly itchy, stinging, red, pustule-riddled rash on my chest and back for the better part of a decade. I saw doctor after doctor and dermatologist with no answer, which led to deep frustration anger and depression. Who wants to live their lives itchy and embarrassed to even wear a tank top or bathing suit in public? I would even be embarrassed to be naked with my husband. I would stare longingly at women in stores ahead of me in the checkout line in their cute skimpy sundresses and tanks, not because I was checking them out(lol)...because I was so jealous of their skin! After 10 or so years, I finally started seeing a derm exclusively who swore we would figure this thing out! Tried antibiotics, antifungal, topicals, sprays, and did two biopsies. He couldn't come to a diagnosis so he sent me to an allergist. After an incredibly uncomfortable couple of days with patch tests all over my legs, we concluded I am allergic to A LOT of stuff. But coconut products are omitted from the test. Why?! Long story long, he recommended I use exclusively free and clear shampoo, conditioner, body wash and laundry detergent. I did for a month and everything cleared...but it was absolutely wrecking my hair! It was like straw...and I swear more of it was coming out in the shower. I got desperate and applied coconut oil to my hair in the shower. Maybe an hour after rinsing, I was broken out all over my back and chest again! I started researching and suddenly, it clicked. I MUST be allergic to coconut derivatives. Its the only thing thats present in ALL of the dozens of different products I've tried over the years. So, I searched and searched and searched and happened upon a shea butter shampoo and conditioner from Sally. It does list olefin sulfonate and Cetyl alcohol in the ingredients, but for some reason, after 3 weeks of use, I have not reacted to it! Now...if you're DEATHLY allergic to coconuts, don't rely on my suggestion. But if you want to try a luxurious and super hydrating S/C that somehow doesn't break me out(after trying EVERYTHING ELSE), and you're suffering from only a rash(albeit devastating), try these! They are cheap too, so if you try them and they don't work...just give them away! Hope this helps! Even if I help one person from this, I will be satisfied. I know how truly frustrating this affliction can be...and a lot of doctors don't seem to be versed on the subject. Please reply with your story!

Hello. I have another major coconut derived ingredient. It is Magnesium Stearate. I knew I had slight coconut allergies, but after being put on Nature-Throid for Hashimoto's I broke out into a severe rash on my chest. Only to find it was made of coconut 3 years later. I then had Biote hormone replace pellets placed in my hip. The first was amazing, then the 2nd set of pellets was placed in my hip and within a week I broke out with hives on my chest again, and down my arms. SEVERE pain, looked like I had been burned the hives were so intense. It took 7 months to get the rash to heal. The only two ingredients in the pellets were Yams and MAGNESIUM STEARATE. Since I have been avoiding this ingredient, and everything else on your much appreciated list, I am doing much better. I am hypervigilant to read every ingredient in everything I eat, or use on my body. I have friends who make coconut free soaps and lotions for me. Thank you so much for your helpful list. Have you concidered updating the list?
I need any cleanser that don't have coconut in it please contact me so I can buy your non-coconut soaps

Clean Kids Naturally has shampoo, conditioner, body wash and something else that are coconut free. I have used them for the past few years until the Canadian distributor stopped carrying them at my local store. I hear they do online orders in the US where they are from and some other countries. Right now I'm using a shampoo bar until I can get some more Clean Kids products.

I melt the last scrap bits with water and make a liquid soap when the pieces get too small. Costs about $11 a bar. I cut it in half and it lasts a long time if it’s kept dry ie not soggy in a dish.
