Sunscreen solutions

I do hate sunscreen. . . smearing it on, missing spots, and breaking out in all sorts of allergic reactions. I found one sunscreen that works fabulously for me- it is by Badger. I call it my Kabuki sunscreen, because it leaves my skin white. At least it's not too drastic and I can see where I've put it.

But, what I like a THOUSAND times more than my kabuki badger sunscreen is my UV Skins. They are swim shirts that feel great in the water and block UV rays so that I don't have to worry about putting sunscreen on a large portion of my body. Okay, I don't love that they went on sale right after I bought them and that they are somewhat expensive, but I love not getting sunburned. I bought one for my little three year old, too, and I love not having to put sunscreen on him as well when we swim or go to the splash park. Well, I do have to put some on our faces and ears, but other than that, we're good now. When you dry them off, they are just like drying off your own skin- they don't retain water at all. And, they do look cute- even next to all my tan friends in their bikinis.

I just found your coconut allergy blog... thank you SO much. I've avoided coconut since third grade when I had a reaction, but since turning 29 or 30, I've started to have SEVERE reactions to products containing coconut oil/acid, and that has progressed not to even trace amounts of items derived from coconut. This has been a GREAT source of information!

I've had reactions to coconut since 4th grade while making Irish Potatoes in class and I'm worried if I keep coming into encounters with coconut, my allergy will get worse. This is a great help. Thanks so much!

GReat blog- I've never met anyone lese who is allergic to coconut. I became allergic about 20 years ago after making a German Chocolate cake. I seem to have the most severe reactions to fresh coconut and most sunscreens. My reactions seem to be limited to skin rashes and hives. I havent noticed a reaction to SLS yet, thank goodness. Seems like that's in everything. So does the allergy seem to get worse with more exposure to coconut? Has anyone noticed afamily connection- should I be worried that my child will become allergic to coconut one day?

My son is allergic to coconut and coconut derived ingredients. He suffered from severe skin irritation from head to toe for over a year until a pediatric dermatologist was finally able to identify the cause. My son has extremely dry skin and eczema. I currently use prescription steroid creams/oils, but am looking for a lotion to use for daily maintenance. He is allergic to Aquaphor and, for some reason, also reacts to Petroleum Jelly. Any suggestions for a coconut-free lotion? Thank you!!

Raw Elements and Tender Sprouts also make coconut free sunscreen. Same price range as Badger and you have to order online. I get mine from Amazon.
