List of Coconut-free shampoos

This is a hard one. I went to the health food store today and read shampoo bottles for about an hour. This was bad because I had my two-year old with me. Unfortunately, I was disappointed and found NONE. All the shampoos use some kind of coconut product. So, online I found some:

Morroco Methods:
Natural Shampoos, have small samples available. Not a traditional lathering shampoo, but gets the job done well.  Be careful which one you choose, some have changed their formulas recently.

Clean Kids Naturally  - it's a baby shampoo that smells like orange.  VERY gentle, Love it.  We have used it on ourselves and our babies for a year or more now.

Go shampoo and conditioner free! This blogger tells how to use baking soda and apple cider vinegar.

Let me know if you've tried any of these or any others!

I'm allergic to coconut too! I just ordered the Crunchy Mama All-in-One, but haven't received it yet. I've had an itch, terribly scalp for years. Just wondering if you've found anything else?

My son is allergic to tree nuts, and while it's unusual for someone with a tree nut allergy to also be allergic to coconut, I think my son is one of the few. He started itching after using Johnson's 24 Hour Moisturizing Wash (body wash), of which the third ingredient is coco-glucoside. I was trying to find shampoos, body washes, and soaps without dyes and perfumes because of his tendency towards itchy rashes; now I wonder if it was a coconut allergy. I tried the Kiss My Face Olive Oil bar soap, which he didn't really like the smell of, but didn't make him itch. I've also read about a shampoo, and also a lotion made by Gluten-Free Savonnerie which is also coconut free. Haven't tried it yet, but intend to order a small bottle. Here's the website: http://gfsoap.com/

Hi Michelle-
Let me know if you order and try the lotion and shampoo. I am also "technically" allergic to peanuts and tree nuts according to my allergist, but have only ever had reactions to cashews. I read somewhere that there are molecules similar somewhere between walnuts and coconut, but other than that I haven't found any scientists interested in the coconut allergic plight.

oh my gosh.......i am cracking up b/c i just ordered the blue house soap shampoo and the canola oils thing is so true....i kept thinking, am i doing something wrong? my hair looked like i hadn't washed it in months....and i ordered the normal, even though my hair is naturally curly. is the earth science one better? i keep spending all this money to find coconut free products and some of them are just awful.

Becky said...

Yes, the Earth Science fragrance free one really is excellent. I've been using it for a couple of months now and LOVE it. The unscented scent reminds me a little of unscented laundry detergent, but there is nothing in it that I have been allergic to at all and it definitely leaves my hair clean!

I use Paul Mitchell hair products.
I use Oil of Olay Sunscreen Moisturizer.
For Makeup I use the Victoria Secret brand makeup - so far the only one that does not put "vitamin additives" that is deadly to me or high amounts of copper to help the skin retain moisture-I had a reaction to that too.

Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way in order to find out exactly which product I can trust, even though the ingredients list didn't list coconuts and nuts. Sometimes the listed "fragrance" but not described what kind has a coconutty smell! hugh!

Recently, for winter, I bought Norwegian Formula Hand Cream, for my hand lotion/cream, and so far not reaction.

I am EXTREMELY allergic to coconut (it's the killer-literally) and all nuts in general, hazelnut, and some seeds, jojoba oil, collagen found in makeup products. So far the particular brands listed above, I have not had any trouble with it yet.

But with anything I buy, I always read the ingredient labels, just to make sure that they did not modify any of their ingredients. Even though I might have bought their products/foods before.

Anonymous said...

Also, if you are thinking about buying the products I recommend, read the ingredient labels first. Because there might be a certain ingredient that you know personally that you are allergic to that I am not allergic too. So be careful!

Anonymous said...

Ok, sorry for the Many comments, but I read your list of different names for "Coconut Oils" and sure enough my "Norwegian Formula Hand Cream" has SEVERAL derived coconut oils in processed ways. Maybe that's what triggered my reaction along with the coconut hand soap at the restaurant last night!

So STAY AWAY from the Norwegian Formula Hand cream!!

I'm going to throw away my little bottle of it right now!

Thanks so much Becky for your good info!!

Anonymous said...

FYI- I am also allergic to coconuts and ordered the Gluten-Free Savvonnerie Shampoo. It absolutely has coconuts in it! It is listed in the ingredients but I gave it a try anyway just to make sure....and sure enough! My scalp was on fire! Beware of any companies who are not willing to list their ingredients online.

Becky said...

I'll take that one off the list. I'm going to try some new ones that people have suggested soon. I hope we're not all destined to wash our hair with soap forever!

Came across this today:
http://www.terressentials.com/haircareingr.html#212

I love how under the "You won't find this" section, all the coconut derivatives are listed. This is a clay based shampoo, so it's totally different, but I'm thinking of giving it a shot. has anyone else tried it?

Anonymous said...

The Earth Science Fragrance Free has Sodium Myreth Sulfate which is derived from Palm/Coconut oil...

Anonymous said...

I have Celiac's disease, so I can't use the Earth Science products because they contain wheat germ derivatives, so I am going to order the clay based shampoos and see what's up. I think it's important to mention that they have specific instructions for "detoxing" your hair when switching over, so it may take a few weeks!

I've known I was allergic to coconut since I was 11, but it took me thirty years to realize that cocamidapropyl and its kin were coconut derivatives -- and that dandruff shampoo was CAUSING my dandruff.

For those of us with both a coconut allergy and psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, there's a commercially-available coal tar shampoo called MG217. It's the ONLY shampoo I've found on regular drug store shelves that doesn't contain cocamide, cocamidopropyl, or other coconut derivatives.

Be advised that it's STRONG, though; the coal tar concentration is actually higher than the shampoo my dermatologist prescribed, and that may have other adverse effects in the long term.

I'll give some of these others a close look. Thanks for the information!

I recently discovered that I have a bad reaction to shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate. So, in doing some research, I found that organic is the way to go, except those with coconut derived surfactants (e.g. sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonade, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, soodium myreth sulfate, sucrose cocoate, coco-betaine, lauryl glucoside, decyl glucoside). They are everywhere! After going through numerous websites promoting all natural shampoos, I think I hit the jackpot. It's morroccomethod.com. They're 100% natural, vegan, and GLUTEN FREE! I'm willing to give them a try since they sell inexpensive trial sizes. Here's hoping they're good!

Hello, and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!!!

I too have, (well what I think is), Latex/Fruit Syndrome or some strain there of. My most recent issue is with Palmitate or Vitamin A (palmitate). And, it's in EVERYTHING!!! Cereal (ALL), Milk (ALL), Bread etc. Because it is processed, my allergy (eyes swell shut) is slight in comparison to having a banana or avocado or any other raw source. None the less annoying to have the small amount of puffiness around my eyes all the time. I will continue to monitor labels and diet with even more scrutiny... I'll be lots of fun on a date!!!

8~(

Could this really be the culprit???
Any feed back would be greatly appreciated!!!

Becky said...

I don't know much about vitamin A palmitate, except that it might affect people who are allergic to the whole palm family. But, I would ask your allergy doctor, and if he/she doesn't know, keep searching for a doctor that can help you. I do know that sometimes allergies are not what you think they are, and that it is worth exploring everything you might be allergic to to reduce your total allergic load so that you don't react to something as tiny as an additive. Good luck!

I have found a couple of small businesses that make coconut-free products. They're not all coconut-free, but they list their ingredients and will respond quickly to your emails.

For shampoo and soap: http://www.countryrosesoap.com/shop.htm

And for lotion: http://lotionsecrets.com/

I emailed the gal (Tara) at Lotion Secrets and told her all of my allergies. She put a recipe together just for me and emailed it to me so I could check it.

We found this great fragrance free shampoo you can find at Choices (Organic Store based in Vancouver, BC). My sister is allergic to Coconuts, nuts and palm kernel oil, among others. I will find out the name and post it here for you. She also uses Val's Soap. Which is carried by Whole Foods here. I took an old bottle of the shampoo to WF and they said they would love to carry it. I'm sure other locations would do the same.

Real Purity makes a coconut-free Chamomile Shampoo. It works well for fine, straight hair, which tends to get a greasy buildup from olive oil castile. I'm sensitive to all sorts of chemicals and botanicals but haven't had any problem with the plant extracts in this shampoo.

Anonymous said...

I just recently found out I am allergic to coconut derived chemicals and finally found a shampoo at Whole Foods that I can use. It is Earthly Delights herbal shampoo. hallelujah! I was thinking I was destined to have dirty hair.

The Earth Science Fragrance free does NOT have coconut. Sodium Myreth Sulfate is an organic compound but is not coconut based. This shampoo is all wheat/vegetable based. If allergic to wheat : be careful!

Apple cider vinegar is fine as a conditioner but not as a shampoo.
I wash my hands with apple cider vinegar, and from reading online it seems that it is just as hygienic as commercial cleaners, but it did NOT work as a shampoo. I left it in for a bit and rubbed it around before rinsing but my hair was still horrible and greasy afterwards.

I actually wrote in to Gluten-free Savonnerie and complained because they had told another coconut-free blog they had no derivatives in the shampoo.

Thanks for your comments guys! I recently found out i was allergic to coconut after using a natural castile soap on my face... I looked like I had a horrrrible sunburn. Then I started to realize that's what was causing my itchy scalp & dandruff. SO until I find a good shampoo, i have been using a little bit of baking soda mixed with apple cider vinegar ( I noticed the previous post was about how ACV is not a good cleanser in itself ) - agreed - but make sure to mix it on your head, otherwise you will have an exploding science experiment in your bathroom :-). I also mix with a bit of soap (kiss my face olive oil) to make it a little more "cleansy". Just make sure to do like a diluted ACV rinse on your hair after or it will be dull and lifeless. I usually do one part ACV, 3 parts water. Good luck to everyone in the search for coconut free shampoo and keep posting your successes!

I'm allergic to coconut too. I have found an amazing shampoo. Its called morrocco method.

Just wanted to save some people time after reading comments, making a list, and researching ingredients...

1. Olive Babassu Shampoo Bar mentioned above has Palm Stearic. Some people who are allergic to coconut also avoid palm.

2. Earth Science Fragarance Free has Cetyl Alcohol, a coconut derivative.

3. Real Purity Chamomile Shampoo has Palm Kernel.

4. Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo has cocomidopropyl Betaine, a derivative.

The ones I can't find any coconut derivatives listed are the morroccomethod shampoos (avoid the apple cider one - has almond & sesame), country rose soap, and earthly delights. Just read those ingredients because they have a LOT of other things that might be in your list of allergens!

I'll let you know if I try any of these...my daughter is allergic to coconut by ingestion, and I didn't think I needed to pay too much attention to topical until the other night I left some conditioner in her hair and it made her scalp skin peel off. Yikes! So I'm off to try some of the above mentioned ones...kinda hard to swallow the prices on these for a 5-year-old's shampoo! I'll let ya know if any work well!

Kat said...

P.S. Oops forgot to comment that Earthly Delights conditioner has coconut in it!

I was tested for allergies and I am allergic to coconut and also fragrances in shampoos. I was using a shampoo through a doctor but a scent was added to the shampoo this year so I can now no longer use it because my head and my back burn when I use it. I used Real Purity a few times but my hair now looks dry and the roots to my hair hurt when I run my fingers through my hair. I tried Burts Bees which has a coconut ingredient in it. The first time my head felt OK but after the second time last night my head started to burn and I started to get dandruff again.
Would ANYONE know of a shampoo that does not contain both coconuts and fragrances? It seems every shampoo that doesn't contain coconuts has a fragrance or every shampoo that doesn't contain a fragrance has coconuts. Oh, and I may also be allergic to palm oil. I'd really appreciate if I can find a shampoo containing neither coconuts or frangrances. This is a real nightmare.

Anon, check out Country Rose's Castile Soap:

http://www.countryrosesoap.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=crsoap&Product_Code=LCS1&Category_Code=lcs

They have a fragrance free kind. I just got the lavender so I'll let you know how it cleans. :-)

Anonymous said...

Thanks Kat for the suggestion. However, I'm a little apprehensive about trying the Country Rose Castile Soap because it has almost the exact same ingredients as the Kiss My Face unscented olive oil soap and when I tried using Kiss My Face on my skin it burned. I think this could be because I have very oily skin and my skin can't breathe when I use it. I also noticed Kiss My Face has a fragrance to it even though there is no added fragrance to it. Maybe this is why Kiss My Face bothered me. Does the Castile liquid soap have a scent to it like Kiss My Face?

Anonymous said...

the kiss my face olive oil soap doesn't say it's unscented, but there is a scent, and that scent made my eczema worse. They just say there's no added scent, but the country rose castile soap can be purchased unscented.

Kat said...

Well, I have to say I'm a new fan of castille soap! The reason I like country rose so much is because it has no other added ingredients to it, and my daughter has many other allergies. I got the lavender scent, and I am sensitive to scents, and it didn't bother me. I will order an unscented bottle and let you know what it is like. I used it in both of my girls' hair and today their hair is soft and even more curly than usual! I love it! It makes me feel good knowing I'm using something that is not adding to my daughter's allergic load.

I would caution against country rose's shampoos. I bought one of those and the fragrance was so overwhelming it knocked me into bed for the rest of the day. Ugh. I also got the morrocco method shampoo and it's fragrance also was too much for me (thank goodness, cause that is expensive stuff!).

HTH!

HAS ANYONE FOUND A CONDITIONER THAT HAS NO COCONUT INGREDIENTS IN IT??

Chris said...

I tried the castile olive oil liquid and bar soaps but they caused burning on my skin. No matter how much I tried I couldn't rinse it out of my hair and skin. I'm not sure if it is an allergy problem or a different problem? I've also tried Grandma's soap which only has lard, lye and water but that irritated my skin also. I can use the Real Purity shampoo but even that may cause a little irritation which may be because it has vanilla in it which I'm allergic to. Also, my face is so greasy the next day after using it my face starts to get irritated and burn. After I use it for a few days my hair in front looks matted down. Either it is too moisturizing for me or it doesn't clean well but at this point I'm running out of options.

Chris said...

Has anyone ever tried soap nuts to wash their hair? Does it do a good job of cleaning? I tried using it a few years ago but I think I didn't make it the right way because the smell from cooking it made me sick and the soap nuts didn't make any suds when I used it.

I am looking for a new shampoo since the one I had been using changed the ingredients. I have spent most of the morning going through all the suggested shampoos. I appreciate your blog and how all are trying to help one another. I am glad I did seem to find a few such as the country rose but I will double check via email or calling them. Please be aware that many of the shampoos suggested have coconut or its derivaties. ****Cocamidopropyl betaine, glycerin, palm, palmitate, coco-?, you get the point.**** Please always check the source of ingredients! Check the ingredients with the products actual website not Amazon or wherever you are buying it from because they may not have updated the ingredients. Then you will end up like me with a $30 dollar bottle of shampoo and a VERY ITCHY scalp. Hopefully whatever I order will come in quickly or I will have to start wearing a wig again :( FYI if you are looking for toothpaste you could check ipsab powder. Personally I like Kiss My Face soap especially since I can get it from Vitacost at a reasonable price. The down side to it is that it gets gooey if too much water is added to it. We flip it often and stand it on its end to get it dry. Yes it sounds weird. Thank you for listening to my rant. PS I also have Celiac disease, am allergic to nuts, and now have to avoid sunflowers. OH how I miss sunbutter.

Another option is to go "poo free" - a new trend hitting the net. People are going shampoo & conditioner free, using only baking soda & apple cider vinegar. Interesting stuff. Here is one blogger's take on it: http://simplemom.net/how-to-clean-your-hair-without-shampoo/ - but all you have to do is Google "poo free" and you'll see tons of sites talking about it!

Chris said...

I have been trying using Kiss My Face shampoo and using baking soda to wash any residue left in my hair and I don't seem to be having too much burning or dandruff in my hair. There seems to be only one ingredient in the shampoo that is coconut related but the shampoo doesn't foam up a lot which perhaps means there is not too much coconut in it. I had burning on my scalp when I didn't use baking soda afterwards but that may be because I am allergic to fragrances so maybe everyone else could use the shampoo without the baking soda. I had tried using baking soda by itself but after four days my face got very greasy so I don't think it was cleaning enough of the oil out of my hair and scalp.

Thanks for the coconut-free shampoo list. I am allergic to most fruits including coconut and finding shampoo is a nightmare. I currently order all of my topical products through House Of Lukaya. The owner's name is Lucretia and she worked with me to create a custom blend just for me that I wasn't allergic too. She has been a blessing and her products are great! Finally, I don't feel so alone and upset about being allergic to coconut! It is so hard being deathly allergic to something that is in shampoo, lotions, makeup, soap, food, TOOTHPASTE, and so much more. Just trying to find alternatives is pricy and time consuming. If you get really daring you can always wash your hair in a Lime Beer mixed with organic greek yogurt.

You know, MirandaJade11, after reading some of the weird ingredients in alternative shampoos, I am wondering why we don't all try washing our hair in various substances to see what we come up with! LOL.

Coconut and palm derivatives are sudsing agents. This is why they in almost every shampoo. You can make a shampoo rinse from soapwort root and herbs that works very well. It does not have a long shelf life - I made a batch each week. I have been looking for something to use while traveling - a thicker liquid shampoo so I did not have to take either vinegar rinse for bar soap, or the soapwort root concoction. Thanks for all the references! I will check out all the brands mentioned for coconut and palm derivatives.

Has anyone tried Arbonne?? I have read the ingredients in all of the products and I saw nothing listed that I know to be a coconut derivative!! I ordered the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and makeup to see how I liked it! I was AMAZED! When you're constantly putting things on your skin that you're allergic too, it's a never ending battle. The body wash dries your skin out, but then the lotion to combat dry skin has coconut in it. Grrrr. Arbonne didn't do that to me. After just ONE shower I could tell a HUGE difference. Their products are vegan, PABA and parabens free,
Here's the page about their ingredients
Arbonne.ca/products

It's seriously the only products I've ever used that do what they say they're going to do... And don't effect my allergy. Little pricey, but the preferred client program helps. I'm thinking of becoming a rep if for nothing more than the discount, it would be worth it!!!

Allergic to Coconut and so much more. The list of coconut derivatives found on this site was extremely helpful in my quest to find something I could use. What I finally realized, is that I am also allergic to many oils. It starts with coconut and continues with palm oil, palm kernal oil, castor oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, olive oil, oatmeal (avena sativa), anything with fragrance and anything plant base. I have been allergic to anything plant base for years and it has taken me the past three to four years to figure out the oil issue. Found a couple things that might be helpful for some coconut suffers. I'm still searching for something I can use without itching all over.
I saw comments about Savonnerie - While their products are Gluten Free, they are full of coconut oil.

Hand made County Soap made by Marlene have some good products that might work for many people. Her unscented-castile-goats milk soap is made with olive oil and feels great. She also has an unscented avocado shampoo with no coconut oil. Because of other oils in these soaps I wasn't able to use. She is actually making a soap just for me to see if I can use it. It takes about 4 weeks for a soap to cure. I have another 10 days to wait until I can try it. I have great hopes.

Heart of Iowa Soap Works has some coconut free soaps that people might be able to use. They had some helpful information about full body soaps and how to get rid of that heavy, it looks like you haven't washed your hair in a week look. Some of the shampoos that are available give you that same look. I added their comment about using vinegar after washing your hair.

http://www.iasoaps.com/index.htm

From Heart of Iowa Soap Works:
When you first start using a shampoo bar don't be surprised if you get what I call the "funky hair" syndrome. Your hair might be fly-away or look lank and heavy... This is just a temporary situation. Too many commercial conditioners and shampoos leave behind a coating on your hair. It might take a few days for the shampoo bar to strip off these excess conditioners. What you will be left with is shiny, full-bodied hair.
We like to recommend to new customers to rinse their hair with a mixture of 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in 2 cups of water after shampooing. Work this mixture through really well and rinse, rinse, rinse with barely tepid water. Your hair won't smell like a pickle, just clean and fresh....I Promise!

I found a couple other soaps that have no coconut oil, but have some plant based products in them that I wasn't able to use. (1) Nature's Plus Aloe Vera soap (2) MSM Soap Herbal Moisturizing Bar with aloe vera & vitamin E. Both if these soaps I really liked, just wasn't able to use.

I hope this info helps someone. The blog was very helpful to me and my search.

I got the "Say Yes to Baby Carrots" baby wash at Whole Foods and it works great. You have to use a big handful of the foam, but I haven't had any problems with it.

Just as I was about to place an order for "Yes To Inc Yes to Baby Carrots Fragrance Free Shampoo and Body Wash," I decided to double check the ingredients. I was not positive about the composition of decyl glucoside, which is does contain, so I researched it. Sure enough, it is derived from coconuts.

Decyl Glucoside is a, natural, non-ionic surfactant, ideal for all foaming and cleansing products. Our Decyl Glucoside, obtained from renewable raw materials, is a combination of plant based fatty alcohols (coconut c8-16) and glucose (corn starch).

So my search continues for coconut and coconut-derived, as well as fragrance-free products that my 12 year old son can use without the repercussions of allergic side effects.

I love your this blog, by the way!! Very informative. :)

H Smith-
Thanks for checking that out- I don't react to it, so the chemical nature of it must not contain the coconut proteins that cause me to have an allergic reaction. Alcohols and fats technically don't contain proteins that cause allergies, but you could still be chemically sensitive to them. But I'm not a chemist or an allergist.

My coconut allergy is so bad that it goes all the way to the lauryl family. It includes palm oil, palm kernel oil, coconut, cocomide, cocomidopropyl, cocos, etc. It's almost impossible to avoid. So we found lye soap. It's nothing but lye and lard. It works like a charm for shampoo, laundry detergent (recipe contains borax, arm & hammer washing soda, and grated lye soap), and soap for baths, showers, and hand washing. I get mine from either the health food store (Grandma's Lye Soap which isn't my favorite), Atwoods's (Sportsman's Lye Soap- better), or from Mo Soap ( http://www.mosoap.com )this is the best one. Hope that helps! So glad to have found this blog! I was beginning to think I was the only one with this allergy!!

Hi,

Clean Kids natually is a brand in some wholefoods. The shampoo, bubble bath and wash seem to be coconut, tree nut and chemical free. Don't use the Conditioner though unfortunately it has shea butter in it if you are allergic to tree nuts.
Also you can order a shampoo bar from Anita Grant in the UK. Its kinda of heavy for use all the time depends on you hair. For skin I have found ceela naturals is free of all major allergens including coconut. Im having trouble finding a conditioner though that has no coconuts or tree nuts. I think there is a dry shampoo from giovanni at wholefoods and cool mint lemonade body scrub. LMK if I am wrong about any of this.

There soaps were listed with coconut oil, but I took a chance and sent them a message to see if they would make me a special soap. They did. They made me an Organic Olive Oil soap that has been absolutely wonderful. Because my allergies are extreme, I have been using this soap to bath with and to wash my hair with. I use an Organic Distilled Vinegar with water as the neutralizer for my hair. It's rare to find any company small or large who is willing to try and make you something that will work for you and your allergies. I've used Kiss My Face before, which has a very harsh odor and I had an allergic reaction. I've also used Olivella, which didn't smell as bad, but still didn't work well for me. This soap was wonderful, very gentle and all Organic. Hope this helps.

I found a company in Canada that makes some soaps and shampoos that are completely natural and do not have coconut. It is called Country Rose Soap. I order their Unscented Castile Shampoo. It doesn't lather but it seems to work well. I have been using it for months and my face has cleared up.

Has anyone tried SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo? They sell it at Walgreen's. Here's the list of ingredients: Deionized Water , Decyl Glucoside (Sugar Beets) , African Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Aloe Vera Leaf Juice , Argan Oil , Panthenol (Provitamin B5) , Rosemary Extract , Sea Kelp Extract , Vitamin E , Lonicera Caprifolium Flower Extract (Honeysuckle) , Lonicera Japonica Flower Extract (Japanese Honeysuckle)

I'm also trying SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque as a conditioner. Ingredients: Deionized Water , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Argan Oil , Vegetable Glycerin , Emulsifying Wax , Sea Kelp Extract , Panthenol (Vitamin B-5) , Essential Oil Blend , Avocado Oil , Tocopherol (Vitamin E) , Hyssopus Officinalis Extract , Salvia Officinalis Leaf and Equisetum Arvense Extract (Sage) , Soybean Oil , Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil (Carrot)

Thanks for the information on Country Rose Soap! I just placed an order for the organic castile soap and shampoo. Now I can make laundry soap and have soap for the shower. No coconut oil finally! I have been looking everywhere. Thanks! I am recovering (3 weeks +) from a severe reaction to our organic laundry detergent full of coconut oil. I still have hives but it is getting better. Glad to find some helpful info :)

I'm wondering what's in my laundry detergent. I've been using the "Free" of everything, but I'm not so sure. I know that I'm allergic to coconut, and maybe palm. Like everyone here, shampoo has been a nightmare to find. I bought some Moroccan method recently. I have to say that my hair looks great after I use it, but i don't enjoy the experience of using brown, vegan shampoo that doesn't really lather...but what is the choice. I've been using Paul Mitchelle baby shampoo, which does nothing for my straight, flat hair, but after reading through this blog, I'm going to double-check the ingredients for obscure derivatives. I also recently bought a book on making my own soap. If anyone has any experience with this and could pass on a tip or two, let me know. Right now I use the purple Dove (I think) body wash, but it is one particular kind of the body wash....I had to read labels for hours to find one that I could use, and Noxzema. I feel like I'm in jr.high again.

Since it looks like people (like me) are still coming back to this post and reading comments for info on Coconut-free products, so I figured I'd add a few products I've come across:

For liquid laundry detergent and other household cleaners, check out Allens Naturally (Ingredients: Water, Alkylarylethoxylate, Triethanolamine, Linear Alkylaryl Sulfonate, Sodium Chloride)

Liquid shampoos, check out the unscented Real Purity Shampoos and body wash as well as Susan's Soaps and More No Coconut Shower Gel

Hey all, there's a really great Instagram page that regularly posts coconut/tree-nut free hair and body products. They are really helpful and go out to seek products you can easily find at your local store or online without these allergens. They are @naturalswithallergies.

As many people who are close to me know I am very allergic to coconut. Many people have this allergy along with me. I have had this allergy for many years now. When I say allergic to coconut I mean I can't eat it, smell it, or use of my skin/hair. What does this mean you ask? All the shampoos out there you know have coconut of some type in them. It's not listed as coconut though its sometimes called sodium cocoyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine or sometimes they do put coconut. My reactions aren't fun either. My whole body is swollen, hard time breathing, numb head to toe, bad sinuses, severe head ache, itchy, shaking and very tired. I have been trying different shampoos for years and no luck. I am not sure why the all shampoos, lotions, and food companies need to put coconut in things, but they do. I have found a few products that are coconut free. I hate feeling like this.

http://www.terressentials.com/haircareingr.html#214
http://www.countryrosesoap.com/Natural_Hair_Care_s/1827.htm

Thanks to your site those website above are just a few shampoos and other products without coconut. I have been searching for years now to find a product that hasn't made me sick. I starting crying when I saw there was no coconut, because I haven't found any product without coconut anywhere. I have been to all kind of store including all natural and coconut is in everything. I searched this morning to find these. I hope they help some else that has the same allergy as me. If you find anything please let me know. Thank you!! Please repost this these websites above have no nut products in them as well.

I just finally figured out that coconut was causing my scalp pain. I knew SLS was problematic. But shampoo bars were causing problems too. All were coconut heavy. So I decided to make my own. I found out that castor oil at 15-20 percent was the key to making a shampoo bar, not just soap. So I made shampoo bars with 85% lard 15% castor oil, then added some peppermint essential oil and ground rosemary. I tried it today and so far so good.

Thank you so much for making this blog. I have had a doozey of a time with allergies recently that started with ingredients in a homemade smoothie, top of the list was almond milk.

I believe I have what's called Oral Allergy Syndrome, and recently was able to to see an allergist... who does not believe I am having allergic reactions and has not ordered any skin tests for me, even regarding the almond milk reaction I had. She even went as far as to tell me that cocamidopropyl was NOT coconut based. Obviously I need to find a new allergist!

It's been a month and I literally had to eliminate everything from my diet because I was reacting to everything, and try at least one new food a day... but I finally did confirm on my own that I am allergic to coconut but testing some coconut oil on my lips.

Since my first suspicions it has been a nightmare finding products without coconut derivatives, and I discovered I do not react to SLS for some reason. My husband found me a "hypoallergenic dish soap" called Dawn Pure Essentials (Sparkling Mist). This is the only thing so far that I can use as far as a all around cleanser/ hand soap/ shampoo/ body wash, so far I have had no reactions. It does lather some, has not dried out my skin but does dry out my hair a bit.

http://www.dawn-dish.com/us/dawn/product/037000222040

I have not been able to find the ingredients list, and it is not on the bottle but there is a list for Ultra Dawn Pure Essentials here:

http://www.pg.com/productsafety/ingredients/household_care/dish_washing/Dawn/Ultra_Dawn_Pure_Essential_Dishwashing_Ingredient_Disclosure.pdf

Again, thanks so much for making this blog, it has been extremely helpful for me, and I am looking forward to trying other products listed here in comments!

Mary- Yikes! Allergists come in many many flavors. Apparently the one you saw believes that many patients are fakers for some reason. As if any of us would make this stuff up! I hope you find someone who will skin and or blood test you! Good luck. Also, as far as dish soap that is great. Not all coconut allergic people react to the derivatives, but those who do can just wear gloves.

I just found out I have a coconut allergy. I also have many other allergies so finding soup and face products is very challenging. Organic Excellence has a coconut free conditioner, but unfortunately their shampoo has coconut in it. I also like their lotion a lot. It is unscented, organic and coconut free, and not greasy. They have a silk protein face cream that is excellent, unscented and coconut free, but don't use the C-max face cream it has coconut. I just ordered the Country Rose castille soap, hopefully it works well. I am running out of options!

I'm allergic to coconut (newly found allergy) and all nickel containing foods as well. This means I can't do any nuts, seeds, legumes, oats, beans, cocoa, etc.

All commercial soaps seem to have coconut derivatives in them. Anything with "coco..." or "coca..." is a coconut derivative.

The most amazing "shampoo" I've found so far is honey. Yes... just raw honey and warm filtered water. Shake the two together in a mason jar before each shower. 1 tbsp of honey to 3+ tbsp of water (I don't measure the water really). I found the recipe here:
http://empoweredsustenance.com/diy-honey-shampoo/

When my hair was really greasy, after going "no-poo" because nothing was safe, I used baking soda to remove most of the grease first. That worked really well, then I did the honey application.

Hey guys! I have a solution for you coconut or nut allergen people! I have scoured this blog only to find most old post and recommendations have since began using some form of coconut derivative, or the only alternative has been a clay based non-lathering option. I have tried them all, even baking soda/vinegar. I am Thrilled to share an awesome solution! It's the Kiss My Face Olive Oil bar soap. All their others have coconut oil so make sure you get the right one. It only has 3 ingredients, olive oil, salt, and water. If you rub the bar itself on your head, it will actually foam up. It's the BEST thing I've found. It leaves my hair clean, and gets out all the oil ( which nothing else has been able to do w/out drying). It leaves it hydrated, because it's olive oil based. I also have used a little bit of vinegar diluted in water as a rinse for conditioning occasionally. You can turn this bar soap into a liquid by using this method. http://frugalberry.com/make-your-own-liquid-castile-soap/
I actually like the bar better as it's tends to later more and is simple. So now I have an all in one body/bar soap that is totally nut free!! SO THRILLED. ENJOY!

Becky said...

Joy- I love that. I can't tell you how many times I've done that when I'm traveling and run out of my own shampoo! It doesn't seem to sting my kids eyes either when I use it on my babies!

I haven't purchased it yet, but the reviews look pretty promising.

I've tried one of their liquid soaps and I really like it, so I have faith in this. Hope it helps! :)

I keep coming back to this thread time after time to find new shampoos. It's definitely difficult being allergic to Methylisothiazolinone and Cocamidpopropyl betaine. Not easy finding something without one or the other. It's really hard finding something without the Coconut. However I have come across Walgreens Ology Moisturizing shampoo. Pear and Cucumber. Check it out. I don't think the conditioner is safe though. http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/ology-moisturizing--revitalizing-shampoo-pear--cucumber/ID=prod6154071-product

Good luck to all the others on the quest for coconut free cleansers!

I am allergic to coconuts, palm, fragrances, latex and anything with latex (shea butter, sunflower oil, etc). I make my own bar and liquid soap and also shampoo. The shampoo is made with soapnuts (aritha powder) and shikakai and sometimes amla when I have it. I make 40 ounces and add preservative, a conditioning ingredient and a thickener. This lasts my husband and I a little longer than a month. It doesn't lather, but we massage it into my scalp and hair. My hair looks and feels great. And my homemade soap is super moisturizing and makes great gifts. :)

I also think I'm allergic to coconut. I tried the baking soda/apple cider combo. My hair was horrendous. I stumbled upon using rye flour as a shampoo. It really worked. When I ran out I pulsed some rolled oats into flour and used that instead. Worked the same. Wasn't as fine as store bought so I basically put cream of wheat in my hair. It was gross but worked. Would sift with fine mesh next time. super easy and no extra chemicals. Just a suggestion.

I've seen a lot of mentions regarding the Clean Kids Naturally Shampoo, and I know a lot of these posts are older, so I emailed the good folks at Gabriel and asked if their Clean Kids Naturally Shampoo contained coconut or derivatives. This is the response it got:

"At this time, yes, clean kids shampoo does have coconut derived ingredients. Gabriel and team are working to exclude coconut in all clean kids products. I would check back in at the holidays for coupons, deals, and the new formula!"

So just be aware that as of now, it DOES contain coconut derived ingredients.

The Clean Mids Naturally you have listed has glycerin. I have recently learned that glycerin is either derived from palm oil, coconut oil or a combo of both. So be aware of this.

I am SO happy to have stumbled across this blog! I have been allergic to coconut and many tropical fruits for about 30 years now. While I have full-blown anaphylaxis if I eat any of those foods, I was okay with cleaning products initially. Then I developed a problem with using toothpaste, then shampoo and, finally laundry detergent. While I don't have the full-blown reaction with the shampoo or laundry detergent, my reactions are becoming more severe. So, I really need to find products I can buy or make myself that do not have any coconut derivatives...and I need to find them FAST! I look forward to reading through all the info on here.

I found out I am allergic to coconut about 2 years ago after an extreme anaphylactic reaction while on vacation. It's been hard because I have always literally loved coconut, my family loves coconut and uses coconut something or other in some way or form while cooking. It started off as just ingesting coconut, but now it's using it in any form. I've been looking for cheap shampoos/conditioners/siaps/body washes, but most of the cheaper stuff has some form of coconut, and I can't afford the more expensive stuff... any suggestions?

That's it!! It lathers, leaves my hands, face, hair and body soft and clean. Favorite product, ever!

I am allergic to coconut, Palm , and all nuts. Not to mention soy and gluten. Watch the vegeatBle glycerin. They never list which vegetables it comes from. I always have to call the company because it usually has a no-no for me. I have been using a clay shampoo but don’t like it. I perm my hair so it’s usually somewhat damaged on the ends. But I have very oily hair otherwise. Bking soda made my head itch. And ACV smell makes me gag (even though I swig a teaspoon full every morning) I just can’t have it on my head.

I have been communicating with Herbal Essences and they sent me the following information:

Thank you for your patience with us at Herbal Essences. We can confirm that Coconut was not been added to the ingredients of the Classic Smooth Collection, the Argan OIl Collection, the Rosemary & Herbs Collection, or the Set Me Up Spray Gel. However, coconut might possibly have been added to the fragrance at low levels. This would be true of any scented P&G product that has had fragrance added to it.

Their new Bio-renew line has 90% naturally derived ingredients as well. I was able to get the Rosemary & Herbs shampoo and conditioner from Amazon prime pantry.

I just looked at it tonight (in 2019) and it now has at least two coconut derivatives in it :-( I have bought the Clean Kids Naturally Tropical Orange Burst Shampoo to try, they didn't have the Banana Detangler, instead they had Mango Mist Spray Detangler. I have tried baking soda wash with apple cider vinegar rinse for the past two and a half months but with my natural curls I have a rats nest that I cannot get a wide tooth comb through and the oil in my hair is so gross, it was nice not to have a painful itchy scalp though. Fingers crossed for the Clean Kids one.

I use a homemade lye soap for hand and body washing. I made it with lard, olive oil, lye and water. I've used it on my hair but didn't find it great with my curls (maybe the olive oil was too much for my fine hair). I'm going to make another batch shortly as it's almost all gone. I'm thinking to try it with straight lard and no olive oil this time after reading your post. It's good to know lye soap is available out there for sale too.

I just discovered my coconut allergy about two months ago - had my big "AHA!" moment upon reading this article: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/10/191017075554.htm. I conducted my own experiment by eliminating and re-introducing coconut products (both internal and external use, independently) over a six-week span.

After scouring the internet and sifting through the ridiculous amount of ingredient names coconut & it's derivatives hide under, I came across the following website:
https://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/help-me-choose/coconut-free/. I've been using the Olive & Babassu shampoo bar for the past two weeks and my scalp eczema and overall hair health/appearance has improved. I've always had very oily hair, but can now wash it every other day without looking like a 50's Greaser.

I also ordered a coconut-free body soap from Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve, but have not used it yet. I've been using the following soap (as recommended by someone's previous comment on this thread) on my face and body: https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Tallow-Soap-4oz-Bar/dp/B01N1YQB7O/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3K2QFZKCVRWEW&keywords=the+healthy+porcupine&qid=1581448072&sprefix=the+healthy+po%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-1.

I hope this helps!

For personal care, I use 100% grass fed, organic beef tallow soap and whipped body butter. I use the tallow soap for my hair and a little of the tallow whip at the ends. My hair took a month to get use to the soap, but is shiny, soft and healthy now.
Allen's natural has dish washing, dish washer and laundry soap that is all fragrance and coconut free. Some of Allen's natural is available on Amazon or go to their website.
Squigle tooth builder toothpaste is coconut free (all commercial toothpaste has coconut or coconut derivatives) this is available on Amazon.

It is easier to find a needle in a haystack than finding a fragrance and coconut free personal care product. Good luck to you all in finding something that works without causing sickness./

Coconut is classified as a tree nut, but in fact it is a fruit.

Hi, Thanks so much for all the info on coconut derivatives!! I can't find the list I made last year. I really appreciate all the post on what others have found helpful!!

I have found that all of the body wash has some form of coconut. I have had to switch to bar soap because I found Dove cucumber and green tea bars don't have any coconut anything in them.

It does have a coconut by-product way down on the list of ingredients, not the 3rd or 4th like most products. I have found that Chagrin Valley has several coconut free products. I ordered some today and can't wait for them to come in!

I used this for three days. Had horrible breakouts on my face. Possibly from the olive oil as it is pore clogging. Possibly from the babassu. I’m allergic to coconut, macadamia, pistachios, pineapple, barley, buckwheat. Honestly it goes on but I also noticed my hair got very squeaky clean. Was falling out a lot too

People do not understand that just because it does not say coconut doesn't mean there is no coconut. I am severely allergic,.there is a long list of coconut derivative ingredients.

Anyone knows what is going on with Magick Botanicals shampoo? I have been able to use the shampoo even though it has coconut but the last order I got had a strange smell to it. The last ones I tried to order from Magick Botanicals for some reason didn't work and I always end up with zero balance due on the invoice. There was only one place I could find it on the internet so I think they may be going out of business. Judging from the customer reviews they quality of the shampoo has going down as well as the customer service. The shampoo I got may be an older batch since it seems a lot like the old shampoo. I don't know what I'm going to do after the shampoo runs out. I have tried several other shampoos but they all cause burning or irritation on my head and my face. I don't have any nut allergies but I am still sensitive to nut products on my skin and the palm and olive oils seem to irritate my skin as well which may be from clogging my pores.

Hi, I love Behr Farm Goats Milk Soap,Unscented. It contains: Goats Milk, Lye, water & Beef Tallow, 4 oz. bars. Made in Gaffney, Sc. USA They sell their soap on Ebay> behrfarm1898

They have a cute little Bear Paw print as their logo.

There is no coconut or derivatives in their soaps.

I thought someone else may benefit from their product.

Terri Sidell said...

Hi, another product that is Coconut Free can be found on the : Pectolite.net site. They use soap nuts as a base with Probiotics in their shampoo & conditioner.

Perhaps these products may be worth trying if not allergic to the other ingredients in the product. The conditioner does have Rice Bran powder in it.
